The Shiva temple in Eraniyur is called the Aatkondanathar temple and is one among the nine Nagarathar temples in Sivaganga.

This temple is located 25 kms from Karaikudi , close by its brother temple Ilayathankudi.

As per legend, Lord Narasimha incurred a dosha after killing Hiranya. He got relief after praying the Lord Shiva here. Hence this place is called Hiranyanoor which had later became Iraniyur.

The Lord here is Aatkondanathar , also called as Narasimmeswarar as he was worshipped by Narasimhar. This is a very old temple believed to be in existence since 8th century. The Lord is a Swayambumurthy.
One can see both the Vimanam as well as the Sanctum Sanctorum together from the front Mandapa, which is a unique feature in this temple.
The Lady consort here is Sivapurandevi , the sister of lord Narasimha , she even had the same amount of rage as Narasimha and her fury is believed to be reflected in the nine pillars around her sanctum.
This is one of the Ashta Bairava sthalas.
Lord Karthikeya, and his consorts Valli and Dheivanai all three sit in the peacock unlike other temples where only Karthikeya sits in the peacock .
